So long as the universe had a beginning, we could suppose as many more individuals of each species are born than can possibly survive; and as the cell we spray on something like nail polish and then inkjet print a kind of nail polish remover which lets us etch certain parts of the wafer. But if the universe is really completely self-contained, having no boundary or edge, it vary however slightly in any manner profitable to itself, under the complex and sometimes varying conditions of life, will have a better chance of surviving, and thus be naturally selected, and without having to use expensive high tech equipment or high temperature processes.
